Narragansett Beach with the Family

Going to Narragansett beach has become a family tradition.  Since my brother and his family live only 25 minutes away from the beach, it has become a no brainer to visit them in the summer and get some beach time in.  While the weather forecast was iffy this year, it ended up being beautiful and we realized we have really lucked out with gorgeous weather the 4 years we've done this trip.  It's been amazing to watch Noah and his cousins grow and play with each other each year.

We headed up to Rhode Island two Fridays ago, and for the first time hit no traffic at all.  Anyone who's driven 95 through Connecticut knows that's a miracle, so I'm assuming it has something to do with our early departure time (7 am).  We were at the beach by 11:30 and the kids (and Chris) were ready to play.  I know I just said that Narragansett beach is our tradition, but this year my sister in law suggested going to Westerly beach on the Friday.  It's a much smaller beach, but that wasn't a big deal at all.  And while we were on a public part, just down the coast is where Taylor Swift's house and private beach are... you may have seen photos of her and her famous friends frolicking in the ocean on the 4th of July.  We however did not see her... obviously!

I always laugh at how into playing with the kids Chris is.  Back home, all of Noah's friends immediately gravitate towards him and even ask for him when he's at work.  He's always up to play and comes up with the best games.  Sometimes I feel bad because he's doing all the hard work while the other parents chat, but I really think he loves it (right???).  Case in point, when we arrive at the beach, I immediately start to set up the chairs and umbrella, while Chris is immediately in the sand with the kids, digging holes.  Right after playing in the sand, he was off to play in the ocean with the older cousins!  Apparently we have our roles down pat... he plays while I photograph! Time and again he wins the "best uncle (and daddy)" award!

While the older cousins were happy jumping waves, the younger cousins were happy to dig in the sand.  Noah usually loves following around Kaitlyn and Matthew, and rarely plays with Aidan, who's only a week older than him.  But since Noah isn't a huge fan of the water, it was a nice change of pace to see Noah and Aidan playing together.  They played in the sand with Grandma, Noah did a "magic trick" with the shovels, and Aidan even showed Noah how to recline the beach chairs.  It was really nice to watch.

^^^ one shovel becomes two shovels... tada!
^^^ putting the chairs up and down provided endless entertainment!

Meanwhile, I went out to take some photos of the older kids, and a random woman showed me this piece of seaweed and told me that the white sac (in the upper left) was a squid about to hatch (???).  Her kids seemed really into it and I figured my niece and nephew would find it cool too.  She told me to get a bucket of water to put it in and you could literally watch squid push itself out.  My 5 year old nephew was especially interested in it and watched the squid almost all afternoon.  We joked around that he was being a labor and delivery nurse that afternoon ;)

While I take the majority of the photos on these trips (as I do in every day life), my mom has been taking more in an effort to get me in more of the photos.  I really appreciate her doing this... now when we look back, we will know that I was actually there ;)

After a day at the beach, we met my brother (who was working) for dinner and then everyone came back to our hotel for a swim.  I shared some of my underwater photos last week, but it was definitely a different experience photographing in an indoor pool AND at night!

The week leading up to our trip, we were very worried about the weather on Saturday.  They were calling for scattered thunderstorms up until the day before.  The forecast finally changed to just afternoon storms, so we took our chances and got to the beach bright and early.  While it was windier than we expected and couldn't keep our umbrellas up for long periods of time, it ended up being a beautiful day.

We were back at Narragansett beach, which is my personal favorite.  But the part that I'll remember fondly on, is that Noah was willing to go in the water with Chris, even if it was being carried.  While Noah loves going to the beach, he's not really fond of the water.  I can't really blame him because I'm not a fan either and actually very rarely get wet at all at the beach.  But Chris grew up swimming in the ocean and would love to share that experience with Noah.  I have a feeling (or at least hope) Noah will get more comfortable with the water the more we go... we just need to be patient.

While Noah's older cousins have always been huge fans of swimming in the ocean, it was Aidan who shocked me!  Only a week older than Noah, and he was out there boogie boarding with his dad (my brother).  The look on his face when he'd ride the wave in was priceless.  He kept asking to go out and do it again!

But after all that boogie boarding... he was done!  Time to rest with his mom :)

As usual, holes were dug and people were buried.  Just a normal day at the beach for us ;)

These next photos crack me up.  I really wanted to get a few posed photos.  One of me and Noah, one of me, Chris, and Noah, and one of the cousins.  Noah was not in the mood for photos so there was some bribery involved.  While I did get a photo of me and Noah, the family photo and cousin photo didn't exactly happen.  And as Noah and I were taking this photo, the waves kept crushing in and getting my dress wet.  That bottom photo where Noah is walking towards Chris, I'm more concerned about my wet dress!  Clearly I need to take a chill pill and realize I'm at the beach and am bound to get wet!

And speaking of that cousin photo...

Chris and I love writing the year in the sand and trying to get a cousin photo.  Not only do you have to work fast before the tide washes away the year, but you also have to deal with the fickle moods of 3-8 year olds.  Noah wasn't interested in looking at the camera and Aidan wanted nothing to do with it at all.  Kids - 1, Mommy photographer - 0.

We finished our trip with lunch at our favorite seafood restaurant, Iggy's (which has become another family tradition) and some more hotel pool swimming.  While it was a short visit, it was a wonderful one.  I can't believe that the next time we all get together will be at Christmas!

Make sure to come back tomorrow when I share the video I made of our trip as well as some tips for making your own family movies.

A Weekend Full of Digging!

This weekend, we had an amazing time with one of our favorite families.  Not only was I lucky to find a great friend, but our kids and husbands get along really well too.  While I am so bummed that they moved a few hours away, I'm thrilled that it gives us the excuse to have these weekends filled with so much fun!  Last fall, we visited them in Massachusetts and went to Thomas Land.   We invited them to come stay with us this summer and suggested taking the kids to Diggerland.  Plans evolved from there, and they once again so graciously hosted us instead!  They ended up inviting us to come down to Ocean City (NJ) for the weekend, where their family has a beach house.  So while we still did Diggerland, we also were able to go to the beach, boardwalk, and pick up as if it hadn't been almost 7 months since we had seen them last!

Weather was a little wacky this weekend.  It was overcast on Friday, very hot and sunny on Saturday, and foggy and rainy on Sunday.  My friend's husband, Chris (we know way too many Chrises!), had to work from home on Friday, so the plan was to go to the beach on Friday and then do Diggerland on Saturday.  So we had a cloudy day at the beach (while not what I had envisioned definitely has its perks!) and then sweat our butts off at Diggerland the next day.  The boys were such troopers and we just made sure to apply lots of sunscreen and keep them hydrated.  Needless to say we weren't surprised when they both fell asleep as soon as we started driving home!    This was our second time at Diggerland (and their first) and we had just as much fun as last time!  Just like last time, we dug big holes with the excavator and rode a few big trucks (as the driver and passenger).  We even let the boys play in the arcade, where Noah was the luckiest kid ever and won so many "tickets" to cash in for numerous prizes (for both he and Quinn)!

On Saturday, we got to the park a little early and were pleasantly surprised to see that a Home Depot was right around the corner.  My Chris remembered that there was a Kids Workshop going on, so we stopped by to do a quick project.  While we do these a lot at home, this was the first time for Quinn and his dad.  Chris and I were extremely impressed with how this one was run... plenty of tables and chairs set up (we often have to sit on the floor at ours), balloons, popcorn, and face painting for the kids, and the Home Depot mascot (Homer D. Po) was there for a photo op too!

The rest of the weekend was spent back at the beach.  Our friends' parents live down there year round and have a beautiful house right on the water.  Our friends go down for a few weeks each summer and were nice enough to let us join in on the family fun for a couple of nights.  The boys were so excited to see each other and had a blast playing together, whether it was digging in the sand or just around the house.  Both mornings, Noah woke up so excited to go play with Quinn and was very upset when we had to leave... he kept asking for "one more hour".    While they are a year apart, they got along really well.  We of course had a few sharing issues, but what can you expect from a 2 and 3 year old who were getting a little tired from our weekend full of excitement and fun!

No trip to the beach would be complete without going to the board walk.  So Saturday night we headed over there after dinner for some rides and ice cream. Noah had such a fun time going on rides with Quinn, that is until they went on one that was just a little too fast for him, especially when they whipped around the corner.   Thankfully a few hugs and kisses, and winning a stuffed dinosaur at a carnival game, made it all better and he was back to his happy self!

We had a wonderful weekend and it made me really excited for summer!  I was however, quickly reminded of what the humidity does to my hair.  I am now on a mission to find a few hair styles that will work this summer.  That, or I need to stock up on lots of hair ties and hats... this humidity is really no joke!

Turks & Caicos - What To Pack | Mommy Style (Vacation Edition)

Today I'm sharing my final Turks & Caicos post.  So far I've recapped about our trip, the food we ate, tips on traveling with a 3 year old, and 10 things I didn't expect to happen on vacation.  Today I'm sharing all about what I wore on the island.  Once we book a vacation and plan our itinerary, I immediately start thinking fashion.  Whether it's a quick weekend away or an extended vacation, I love planning outfits.  Chris laughed at me when he saw that I made a spreadsheet for our California trip a few years ago.  I listed each day, with our itinerary broken out as well as my planned outfit.  I even did a fashion show, trying on all the outfits before we left.  Needless to say, he has a much simpler packing process ;)   I will warn you that I am not one of those travelers who sticks to a carry-on... I wasn't even before having Noah.  And now that I'm traveling with a 3 year old, I definitely want to have options (for him and myself) and hate being confined to carry-on.  I also like to be as hands free as possible in the airport and on the plane, so I love the idea of checking a bag and forgetting about it.  I've never lost my luggage (knock on wood), so who knows if I'd change my tune if I ever do.

First up, what I wore on the plane.  I basically wore a version of this outfit both there and back.  A pair of comfortable jeans, a casual tee, and some slip on espadrilles.  I definitely encourage wearing slip ons to make going through security that much easier.  I also packed a black cardigan in my carry-on to use when we were in NJ (it was in the high 50s) and just in case it got chilly on the plane.

Once in Turks & Caicos, I kept my fashion pretty simple and basically stuck to a uniform.  I packed some comfortable shorts and t-shirts for the few times I wanted to change into dry clothes for breakfast or lunch.   But other than that, I basically lived in a swimsuit and sundress coverup.  For the most part, I keep my sundress on and only take it off when going in the water.  I definitely have the mom body and want as much coverage as I can.  And since I'm pretty busty (and this was a family vacation), I prefer to have swimsuits that cover up the cleavage.  While I am in love with the black one piece, I do wish it was cut a little higher on top.

After a day at the beach and pool, we would all shower and get ready for dinner.  On a beach vacation (and in the summer back home), I live in sundresses.  While still comfortable and casual, I chose a few of my dressier options to wear each night.  Because of my laid back style, I was able to pack just 3 sandals... plastic flip flops for the beach, metallic sandals for the evenings, and leather slip on sandals for grabbing a quick meal.  I honestly think I could have left the leather slides at home, but they barely took up any room in my bag :)  And similar to my style at home, I added a few accessories to make my outfits a little more interesting.  A colorful watch, a few bracelets,  and some statement earrings to wear at night.   I ended up bringing a white tote to use at night.  If Noah wasn't with us, I could have made do with a fun straw clutch, but I wanted to bring a pretty bag that could also carry all of Noah's dinner entertainment (coloring books, transformers, and iPad).  This bag was absolutely perfect and I loved the excuse to carry a white purse in March!

My beach vacation routine is to shower and blow dry my hair before dinner, then just throw it in a pony tail the next morning and head straight to the beach or pool.  I brought my hair dryer and flat iron (maybe that's overkill, but oh well), and while my hair dryer worked, my flat iron just didn't heat up.  Not sure what the deal with the voltage was, but I was a little concerned I broke my pretty new flat iron.  Thankfully it works fine now that I'm home, but on vacation I wasn't able to use it.  I ended up embracing my natural curl and just letting it air dry most nights.  I kind of wish I had brought my beach waves spray to help it out even more.

So tell me, are you a light packer or do you bring lots of options "just in case"?
