Our Valentine's Day

Being that Valentine's Day was on a weekday this year, it felt a little different.  Not that we necessarily go all out when it's on a weekend, but I have to admit that Chris and I really do like to shower Noah with love and treats.  So while Chris and I had our "Valentine" date over the weekend, we still tried to make the day special for Noah, even if Chris had to work.  Our Valentine's Day was filled with festive food, a craft, and a few gifts.

On Valentine's Eve, we went over to our friends' house for a play date and made some heart shaped mini pizzas with the kids.  Some sauce spilled over and more cheese went in their mouths than put on the pizzas. But the kids had fun, and the pizzas still resembled hearts when they came out of the oven, so I call it a huge success!

Noah had so much fun doing the "Buddy the Elf" scavenger hunt, that I knew I wanted to do another one for him for Valentine's Day.  After he fell asleep, I hid some heart shaped clues all over the house while Chris blew up a bunch of balloons to hide in the basement as the "treasure" at the end of the hunt.  The clues were things like "your favorite drink", which led him to the chocolate milk in the fridge and ended with "where you and Daddy play on the weekends", which led him to the basement to find the balloons!  He got every clue really fast, and was only confused by the last one, guessing that he and Daddy usually play in living room, not the basement.  He loved the scavenger hunt and I definitely think this will have to be a new tradition for us!

And even though Chris had to work on Valentine's Day, he still managed to surprised Noah and me when we came downstairs in the morning.  Balloons, roses, and lots of sweet treats greeted us when we walked in to the kitchen.  While I had originally planned to make Noah some red pancakes for breakfast, as soon as we saw the donuts, those plans changed!

We then quickly got ready and headed out the door to meet up with some friends.  I was a little bummed he wouldn't wear his Valentine's shirt, but he did promise me he'd wear it to school the next day for their Valentine party.  We went to our local environmental center where the kids learned about birds, and then made a Valentine craft AND a bird feeder.  It was so sweet when Noah decided that his craft was going to be for Daddy when he got home that night!  We then went to lunch with his friends before heading home to just hang out.  It really was a great way to spend Valentine's Day!

Once we were home, it was all about the gifts.  Chris and I kept it simple by giving Noah a new construction Lego set and some alphabet stamps.  He loved them both and was ready to start building, that is until Grandma arrived with even more gifts!  This boy is definitely loved (and spoiled!).

Grandma and Papa gave him Guess Who, a Batman Lego set, a few books, and even more candy.  I think it's safe to say that Noah was basically surviving on an all sugar diet at this point!  After reading Wacky Wednesday, playing multiple rounds of Guess Who, and building his Batman Lego, it was time for dinner.  Noah wanted to eat at home, so my mom went out and picked up Chipotle for us, getting an extra bowl for Chris for when he finally got home from work.  I was so relieved to see the sugar didn't affect Noah's appetite and he inhaled his quesadilla, rice, and cantaloupe!

Grandma went home, and we were lucky enough to have Chris home on time (which still isn't until 6:45).  Noah helped us exchange cards and open our gifts.  We were cracking up to find out that we both used the same photo in our personalized cards!  Chris took my hints and got me a few things I mentioned in this post.  I was a happy girl :).  As for Chris, I got him some beer a little 6 pack cooler we can use when we go to BYO restaurants.  I had put the beer in our basement fridge a few days ago, knowing there was a good chance of him seeing it.  He kept quiet but admitted that he had already seen it.  I got him Sam Adams Cherry Wheat and he was convinced that I bought it after asking his friend what his favorite beer was.  We don't really drink much at home and I really know nothing about beer. When we are out, I usually see him order a Miller Lite, or prefers to try something new that they have on tap.  But since this was a gift, I wanted to get something a little nicer than Miller Lite.  So I went to our local liquor store and just started looking at all the different beers.  I ended up with the Cherry Wheat because I remembered he liked the seasonal Sam Adams and he's always down for trying the fruity flavors.  Chris was shocked that I just happened to pick out his favorite beer without any help.  We couldn't get over how random and fortuitous my beer selection was!

So that was our Valentine's Day.  An otherwise typical Tuesday, that was made special and full of extra love!

Teacher Gifts for Valentine's Day

Only one week left until Valentine's Day.  While I do think it's a Hallmark holiday, I love that it's an excuse to show some extra love and treat the special people in your life.  Valentine's Day lands on a Tuesday this year, and that just so happens to be our "free day" where Noah and I don't have any set plans.  I have some fun things planned for the day, including lots of heart shaped and red foods as well as a few fun activities to do with Noah.  While we will be home on the actual holiday, Noah will be bringing some paper valentine cards into school for his classmates the day before.  I thought it would be nice for him to give a little something to his teachers as well.  We have some amazing teachers that really deserve some extra recognition. When giving gifts, I try not to go overboard and prefer something practical with a little extra treat.

I knew Target was the place to go, as their holiday selection is always on point, and found these really cute mugs from the dollar section.  I knew I wanted to fill them with a gift card and some chocolates. My favorite chocolates are Dove, and I chose the traditional milk chocolate as well as the caramel filled ones.  These are definitely my favorite, so I hope they like them too!  While at Target, I also grabbed some cute metallic gift bags and tissue paper to tie in with the mugs.  As for the gift card, I continued on with the mug theme and got some Dunkin Donuts gift cards.  Even if they don't like coffee, they have to like donuts right???

When it came time to assembling the gift, I added some tissue paper in the bottom of the mug.  That way I didn't need as much chocolate to fill it to the top and the gift card is visible as soon as they open it.  I really hope they enjoy this simple Valentine gift and know how much we appreciate them!

Valentine's Day Craft | Watercolor Hearts

Valentine's Day is just about 3 weeks away.  While it's safe to say that I decorate way more for other holidays, I still enjoy pulling a few of my favorite Valentine's Day pieces out each year.  I really love adding a few touches of red, pink, and hearts to my mantel and dining room sideboard.  And thanks to Noah and his artistic side, I am adding a new one of kind art piece to display each year.  Last year, I had Noah paint a canvas using the tape-resist technique.  Not only do I love that it says LOVE, but I also love that Noah's little handprints are all over it :).  This year, I decided to try something new.  Noah is becoming more and more precise with his coloring and painting skills, so I thought it may be time to try something a little more advanced than just mixing paint all over.

LOVE Canvas (from last year)

I found this watercolor hearts idea on Pinterest and knew that if Noah wasn't interested in doing it, that I would be doing it myself.  I really loved the look of it and couldn't wait to see how Noah made it his own.

Materials:
White card stock (or other thick paper)
Pencil and ruler (to draw the hearts)
Watercolor paints (in whatever colors you like)
Black Sharpie (optional)
Frame (optional)

Instructions:
If planning to frame, cut your card stock down to 8X10.
Using a ruler, I plotted out 5 even spaces to draw my hearts.  This is where some basic math skills will be helpful.
Using the ruler as a guide to stay straight, I drew 5 hearts across the paper.  This doesn't need to be perfect, so just do your best drawing hearts.  If your kids are older, you can even have them help with this step.
Paint in the hearts with watercolor paints.
Once dry, if the hearts need some more definition (due to not staying perfectly within the lines), you can use a black Sharpie to outline the hearts.
Now you can frame (or not) and display!

When planning this craft, I had envisioned using different shades or red, pink, and purple paints.  But Noah was kind of against it being a "Valentine craft" and wanted to paint it rainbow colors instead.  He's becoming more and more independent with his crafts and often has a very clear artistic vision that is different than mine.  I want to foster this creativity, so I'm letting him take the lead.  I did however warn him that I didn't make enough lines to have all the rainbow colors, but he seemed okay with having to leave purple out.

While Noah was very careful, he is only 4, and ended up painting a little outside the lines a bit.  Some of his hearts looked a little more like a blob, so I suggested outlining them with a black marker, and he thought that was a great idea.  I love how it turned out and I love seeing it framed on my mantel.  And since he did decide to do rainbow colors, I think I could get away with displaying this all year round!  I think it would look great as part of our gallery wall in the playroom part of our basement!

This craft was so simple and fun that I'm still tempted to do one myself.  I think painting a bunch of hearts could be rather cathartic!

Pin for later??

Valentine's Day Weekend

Happy Tuesday that feels like a Monday!   While Chris is back at work today, Noah doesn't have school until Thursday.  We are enjoying our day off by running some errands and having a play date with friends.  We are truly easing back into our routine after having three days at home with daddy.

Our Valentine's Day Weekend was pretty great!  It was even better that it was a 3 day weekend because of President's Day.  Originally, my older brother and his family had planned to come down for the long weekend.  We had lots of activities planned to keep the kids busy, but they ended up cancelling because of the weather forecast for snow.  Instead, it was just Noah's other uncles (my brother and his husband) who were here for a visit.  While the itinerary changed a lot little, we still had a lot of fun.  Luke and Tyler were able to come to our house and play with Noah for a little bit before we went out to dinner as a family... a very romantic 7 person "Valentine" dinner ;)

Noah got this Daniel Tiger Board Game for Christmas and is obsessed with it!  We play it almost every day and he begs anyone who comes over to play it with him too.  First he played it with Luke and Tyler when they came over Saturday afternoon.  Just "the boys" played while I took pictures and helped explain the rules ;)  Then it was time for Grandma and Papa to play with him when they came over on Sunday.   The game reminds me as a combination of trivial pursuit (because you go around collecting chips from each character's house) and charades (because you act out things on the cards)... all of which is designed for little kids.  I always find it very entertaining to watch the adults act out the "imagination" cards and identify how the character is feeling on the "feeling" cards.

Daniel Tiger Game

On Sunday, in addition to playing more Daniel Tiger, we tried to make it a little extra special because of Valentine's Day.  Chris surprised both me and Noah with lots of chocolate goodies from our favorite chocolate store, Enjou.  It's where we got our wedding favors as well as my bridal and baby shower favors.  We get chocolate from them every year now :)  Chris also got me a beautiful bouquet of roses and we exchanged cards.   While I don't necessarily think Valentine's Day is silly, I also don't think we need to go all out with extravagant gifts.  Flowers and chocolate is PLENTY for me :)  We also love making any and all holidays special for Noah and got him a few gifts to open.  We gave him our new favorite game, Looping Louie, and a few books. We also ate lots of heart shaped food... donuts for breakfast, heart shaped cheese for lunch, and even an ice cream cake for dessert.

Since Noah's cousins were supposed to be here for Valentine's Day, I had a bunch of fun activities planned to do with them, including decorating sugar cookies.  Instead of letting everything go to waste, we continued on with the plan, but instead of just Noah decorating the cookies, my parents, Chris and I also had fun making some iced cookie creations!  I used this recipe for the sugar cookies and some store bought icing.  Using food coloring, Noah helped me mix up some pink, red, purple, and yellow (Noah's choice) icing and decorated the cookies with sprinkles, M&Ms, conversation hearts, and red hot candies.

It was another great Valentine's Day spent with my two favorite guys.  They really make my life so wonderful.. and this little guy makes me smile (and laugh) every day :)

And no holiday would be complete without looking back at some old photos to see how much Noah has grown.  I of course had to make a collage of Noah's past Valentine's Days (2013-2016).  I was most shocked at how much older he looks just from last year to this year... he really isn't a baby anymore!

How was your Valentine's Day weekend?

Will You Be My Valentine | #ValentineBlogSwap2016

Today I am super excited to share with you the valentines that Noah and I made.  Noah's school has a "card only" policy, meaning I can't be Pinterest creative and include a cute toy or food with the valentines for his school friends.  Thank goodness for the blogging world and the amazing friends that I've made so that we had an excuse to get our craft on!  Last year, Liz and I organized a Valentine Blog Swap, and I loved it so much that I decided to organize another one this year.  More of our friends (and their kids) wanted to participate this year, which made it even more fun!  While it was fun making our valentines, it was even more exciting to open the mail each day and find a valentine surprise for Noah!

First up, are the Crayon Hearts we made to send to all of our friends.  We raided our crayon tin and started peeling the wrappers off.  To make it easier, I used a pairing knife to cut a slit into each of the wrappers and then Noah would peel the paper off.  We made a pretty good team :)  I then broke all the crayons into thirds and grouped them in cups by color.

I then simply filled the heart mold with different color combinations of crayon pieces.  Since my mold is silicone, I placed it on a baking sheet to make it easier when transferring to and from the oven.  I then simply baked the crayons in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 250 degrees.

Since the crayons were melted when I took them out, I had to let them harden and cool completely before taking them out of the mold.

Once they were all finished, I used a spot of hot glue to secure them to the Valentine card.  I made a simple but colorful card in Photoshop and printed them out on white card stock.  You are welcome to download the printable here to use for your own personal use.   Then I had Noah help me sign his name, and they were ready to go!  I love how they turned out, and I hope all the kids enjoy coloring with them :)

Printable

As I said before, Noah and I really loved making our valentines, but our favorite part was getting a ton of fun mail and seeing what our friends made!  As the valentines arrived, I put them aside so that Noah could open the majority of them all at once.  He really was so excited to open each envelope and see the different cards and goodies.

Let me tell you, we have some super creative friends and they went above and beyond!  There were beautiful handmade cards, games & activities to do, and of course some yummy candy to enjoy!  They definitely made his day a lot more fun and delicious!  Make sure to head over to everyone else's blogs (listed below) to see how they made their valentines.  If you haven't yet decided on what to give this Valentine's Day, I'm sure you will find an idea you love!
