Mom Style Remix | Colored Bottoms

Colored bottoms.  In the colder months, all I wear is jeans... that is if you don't count sweatpants and yoga pants ;).  And honestly, there's not even much variety in the few pairs of jeans I own.  But when summer comes, I'm all about having more variety and mixing some more colorful bottoms into my wardrobe.  While I'm often in a sundress, I have a few pairs of shorts that I absolutely love, a few of which are colored or have a print on them.  The one thing you will notice is that I'm a fan of a little bit longer short.  While I used to only wear bermuda shorts, I have started to wear a slightly shorter inseam (usually 4-6 inches).  Here's a pair of shorts I just got this year.  I love the print, the length, and the slightly thicker material.  I have to admit that at first I worried I wouldn't get a lot of wear out of them since they are paisley, but since they are in different shades of blue, they are easily paired with a lot of different tops.   Here are two examples of how I've worn them so far.

Since I would describe my style as being pretty simple and muted, if I'm wearing patterned shorts, I try to keep my top more simple.  I've seen many people mix colors and patterns really well, but I just feel more comfortable keeping one piece of my outfit as the standout.  I do this by either pulling a color from the shorts and wearing it in a solid tank.  Or you can always stick with the neutrals... black, white, or chambray.   Then, if I want to add a little more excitement to my outfit, I can do so with the accessories.  I love how adding the red tassel necklace to my otherwise blue outfit made it patriotic for the 4th of July.

My shorts are from Loft.
While no longer available, they have so many cute options... solid and printed!
similar top | sandals (in black) | necklace (Sugar Bit) | sunglasses
chambray shirt (similar, similar) | bracelets | sandals (in black) | sunglasses

My style recipe is all about easy outfits that are comfortable while still looking good.  In the cooler months, I like to achieve this by layering with light jackets and scarves.  But in the summer when you desperately want to stay cool, I like to add some extra interest with brighter colors and fun patterns.  That's why I love this colored bottoms trend so much!

Head on over to Jenn and Anne's blogs to check out the colored bottoms they styled for the Mom Style Remix!

  1. I love that you included chambray as a neutral :) I struke out this time, even with your great pep talk, I just couldnt do a colored bottom. Boo on me lol. Your sandals are darling!

  2. I just got a light blue pair of shorts and a striped pair, which are also blue. The light blue is harder to match up but I can see wearing it with black, white, or darker blue!

  3. I love your patterened shorts! I have several pair of my own and they are my most favorite.

  4. So cute! I picked up my first pair of patterned shorts this summer and I am LOVING them. I need to get some more soon.

  5. I LOVE your blue top with the lace! Bummer it's not available any more :(

  6. You've become quite the fashion blogger, my friend! I adore those shorts with that navy top! The perfect outfit for a day of errands or a fun playdate!

  7. Those shorts are so cute! I love the longer length too--I have such a hard time finding shorts I like that aren't too short. Both looks are great, but my favorite is the one with the navy top and fun tassel necklace. Love it!

  8. Love this dressed up/dressed down remix! And I love how a pair of shorts like this adds instant interest to an outfit when it's too hot to do much layering/accessorizing. Thanks for linking up!

  9. I love both looks. I had to do a double take and see if the were the same because just changing the top made a huge difference.

  10. I love those shorts and the many different ways you can wear them! I think wearing them with a bold top (like red or pink) would look great too!
