Trunk or Treat with Hershey | #TrickOrSweet

This year, my son's preschool is hosting a Trunk or Treat on Halloween.  In case you don't know what that is, it's basically trick or treating, but instead of going to houses, you go around to a bunch of car trunks :)  We have gone to them the last two years through our MOMS Club and I'm super excited to go to one again this year.  I find they are really growing in popularity for the same reason that I love them.  They are a great (and safer) alternative for little kids to go "trick or treating".  I love that they still get to experience collecting lots of candy while doing so in a contained space (usually a parking lot).

At my son's school, they asked for families to volunteer to decorate their trunks and provide candy to hand out.  I, of course, signed up and started brainstorming ideas.  The most important part is what kind of candy to hand out.  I stopped by Walmart and picked up some of the large variety bags of Hershey candy as well as some supplies to decorate the trunk with.   Hershey's has always been a favorite of mine (Heath being my personal favorite!) and is an absolute must for Halloween.  I especially love these large variety bags.  They are super affordable for all the candy you get and I love that they are the perfect size to hand out to little trick (or trunk) or treaters!

I decided take it a step further and make the candy a little more festive.  I thought it would be cute to turn the boxes of Milk Duds into mini bats.  All I needed was some black card stock, googly eyes, some double sided tape, and glue.  I drew a template of some bat wings that were the appropriate size for the Milk Duds.  I am really not an artist by any means, but drawing the bat wings was actually really easy.  My template reminded me of a wonky looking bowtie.  I then just used the double sided tape to attach it to the back of the Milk Duds and glued some eyes to the front of the box.  So simple yet cute and festive :)

Once I had the candy sorted out, I started decorating our trunk.  First, I covered the trunk with some orange plastic tablecloths and put up a few cardboard Halloween signs that I found in the holiday section at Walmart.  They are technically supposed to be hung up by strings, but I just leaned them against the headrests and back of the seat.  I liked the combination of the glittery signs with the real pumpkins that we picked up from the farm :)

In addition to our store bought decorations, I wanted to add some homemade decor as well.  I stuck with the bat theme and made some bats out of card stock to hang from the open door.  I found a bat template online and simply added some eyes and hung them upside down with some fishing wire and tape.

I also made a ghost garland.  Another super simple craft that even the kids can help with.  Just take a cotton ball, place a tissue over it, and tie some string around it.  Keep going, adding as many ghosts as you need for your garland.

Will you be handing out candy this Halloween?  Be sure to check out all the delicious Hershey's Halloween Candy at Walmart.  I'd love to hear what your favorite is!

  1. Yum!! Love the milk dud bats! Such a cute idea and kids will love it. I also like trunk or treating. So much safer. We went to a truck or treat at our local fire dept last year and that was fun.

  2. I'm a Heath lover too!!! I stole all of them from Reed's candy last year. I wonder if he'd notice if I did it this year. Wish me luck!

  3. I have never heard of this concept but what a fun idea! I am a non chocolate kind of girl - however those milk duds break the rule! Are milk duds chocolate? What are milk duds? Thinking out loud here. ;)
